John Hancock Investments

Winner of the 2016 MITX Gold for Most Innovative Financial Technology, the John Hancock Investments ETF site provided our team with a unique challenge: how to build a website with no existing content.

With John Hancock rolling out their brand new ETF products, there was a lot of conceptual thinking around what the content should say and how it should represent both the history of John Hancock Investments, while pointing to the future and, of course, their new products.

Working with both exceptional internal and client-side teams, we worked to define at the most granular levels what the strategy for each content module should be. This is a responsive site, so images, character counts, and videos needed to work across devices to be successful (and, frankly, to be approved).

Both strategic and technical, this was one of the coolest projects I’ve ever worked on, partially because we were working from a blank slate. To help our teams wrap our heads around required content, I worked to produce:

  • Content approach and recommendations documents for authoring teams to follow.
  • A content model and matrix for Engineering delivery.
  •  Both of these artifacts includes content input from cross-functional partners, in an effort to streamline our process and drive towards a fast build under strict deadlines.

There were certainly some challenges along the way, but ultimately the final result was a beautiful, award-winning website that I’m proud to say I was a part of building.
